As of Monday the New York Times has shut down it's quartlery sports magazine, Play.
"First published in February 2006, Play won many accolades for in-depth reporting and vivid photography, and this year it was a finalist for the prize in general excellence at the National Magazine Awards," New York Times reporter, Richard Perez-Pena said.
I think that for many a sports magazine is a luxury item. Thus with the current economy, it has forced many to cut out the "want" items.
“It was a nice run and we enjoyed it, but given the reports almost daily of magazines cutting back and shutting down, I have to be philosophical about it,” said Mark Bryant, editor of Play.

Depending on how much of a sports fanatic a person maybe, this cut of the “Play” magazine could be dramatic. Although, if the magazine was popular, no matter how bad the economy is, there still would be enough funds to help sponsor and circulate its issues.
It seems like every day some new media is being shut down or partnering with online media. It seems like print media may be slowly coming to a end.
It is definitely a tough time to be in the printed press business. Everytime I hear about another part of the press shutting down it saddens me.
One statement
In troubled times, luxuries must be cut.
I don't know, gas is cheap now, so...just maybe people could afford the mag now.
